After another busy month at Little Heath, this edition of the newsletter is full of highlights to share.
Thanks to everyone who joined us for our Sixth Form Open Evening at the start of the month. We had an exceptionally high number of attendees and the event was buzzing as prospective students explored the subjects and opportunities available in our Sixth Form. I am grateful to everyone who contributed to making the evening such a success, especially our student ambassadors, who were amazing!
Year 11 and Year 13 students received their PPE results this month, which has highlighted a key moment for them in their academic journey. I know the teaching staff, tutors and Key Stage teams will now help them identify areas to focus on as they prepare for their final exams next summer. Find out more school news in our 'Latest News' section.
All of our sports teams have done us proud this month, as always, but a particular mention has to go to the U16 Boys' Basketball Team, who have demonstrated true leadership and teamwork in every match. Their dedication has absolutely paid off and is an inspiration for our school community. You can read more in our 'Student Spotlight' section.
I would also like to thank all the students who took part in the recent Feeling Safe at School survey. The results have been hugely positive, with students expressing that they feel supported and secure in our school environment. We have shared the highlights with you in the article below.
I am looking forward to the festive events planned for December, which will bring our school community together to celebrate the season. I look forward to seeing many of you there as we round off the year.
Thank you for your ongoing support.
Mr David Ramsden
Headteacher

Flu can be an unpleasant illness and can cause serious complications. Vaccinating your child will protect them and also help protect more vulnerable family and friends by preventing the spread of flu.
The school immunisation team will be visiting Little Heath on Monday 9 December 2024 to administer flu vaccinations. If you would like your child to be vaccinated, please complete the electronic consent form using the link below (one for each child) and insert our unique code: BK110063.
Flu nasal spray consent link (contains small amounts of porcine gelatine)
To give consent for your child to receive the nasal flu vaccine, please complete the following consent form: Consent for Flu Nasal Spray
Injectable flu vaccine consent link (porcine free)
If you decline the nasal spray due to its porcine content, please use this link to consent to an injectable form of flu vaccine: Consent for Injectable Form of Flu Vaccine (Porcine Free)
Please note this is given via injection in the upper arm.
We ask for your child’s NHS number on all consent forms. This allows your child’s immunisation to be recorded on their GP records. The NHS number can be found at Find your NHS number - NHS (www.nhs.uk).
Even if your child had the vaccine last year, the type of flu can vary each winter, so it is recommended to have it again this year. For further information see: www.nhs.uk/child-flu
Vaccination saves lives and is the most important thing we can do to protect ourselves and our children against ill health.
12 Days of Christmas Attendance
All students should be aiming for an attendance of 96% or higher. There are only 190 days in a school year and if attendance is at 90%, students miss 19 days of learning in a school year!
Year-on-year LHS and national evidence shows that progress drops when attendance falls below 96% and there is a quick drop-off in students achieving 4+ and 5+ in English and Maths.
Each term we have a prize draw for students who achieve 100% attendance. In addition to this draw, all students who achieve 100% attendance for the last 12 days of the term will get entered into an extra prize draw for some additional prizes!
The days that count will be Thursday 5 - Friday 20 December.

KS5 Update
KS5 is always a hub of activity, and I am always incredibly proud of the way staff and students pull together to demonstrate the very best of our Sixth Form.
|
|
We had another extremely successful Sixth Form Open Evening where prospective Year 11 students from Little Heath and other surrounding schools joined us to experience the wealth of subjects we offer at A Level. Over 80 students from Year 12 and Year 13, as well as subject teachers and the Sixth Form team worked tirelessly to welcome approximately 900 people during the evening. We had some lovely feedback from attendees with 90% of students listing Little Heath School as their first choice for Sixth Form.
|
|
“It was a great night and a superb opportunity for me, as a governor, to see all that is on offer for our students and how the 6th form contributes to the wider life of the school. I really appreciated seeing some of the work that is produced by the Sixth Form when I visited many of the classrooms and departments. The passion that teachers have for their subjects was clearly evident and shows the commitment Little Heath staff have for their students and the school. The student ambassadors were a great asset to the school. They showed how much they enjoy school both through their learning and the opportunities available for their personal development.”
|
“It is important to share the successes of last year's pupils and their next steps, wherever they have gone, for the future 6th form students and their families. Achievement and success happen in a variety of areas, not just academic and not just the top grades. It was lovely to hear the destinations and successes of the previous pupils who studied vocational courses as well as traditional A-levels.”

Every year, November is always a busy time for our Year 13 students. This year has been no exception. Year 13 approached their PPEs with determination and a commitment to succeed. They have also been busy attending personal statement clinics where four different universities come in to offer one-to-one support. For the first time, we have also offered a CV clinic where students have had one-to-one support on their CVs to help with their apprenticeship or employment applications. It has been great to see so many students getting lots of top university offers and the motivating effects these offers have on the students.
We have also celebrated our Year 12 students in a recent praise assembly. These students achieved exceptional Engagement with Learning scores in their introductory school reports. They have made an excellent start to Year 12 and should be very proud of the way they have approached their transition from GCSE to Sixth Form.
|
|
We regularly try to enrich our students' time in Sixth Form and this month's trips have included a visit to The Guardian; a financial awareness workshop, and a mock COP trip. A group of Year 13 students also attended the regional round of the Mock Trial Competition held at Reading Crown Court and although they did not progress to the next stage, they did successfully achieve a not guilty verdict in one case.
|
|
|
At the end of November, we continued our valuable extra-curricular offer, in conjunction with West Berkshire Council, to advise Year 12s of the positive and safe way to approach driving, as they begin to celebrate their 17th birthdays. The year 13 students also attended a Knife Crime presentation which was incredibly thought provoking.
As we progress into December, we have arranged useful subject and revision workshops to support both Year 12 and Year 13 with practical strategies they can use. We are also looking forward to our Christmas lunch on Wednesday 11 December and hope our students will enjoy this as much as we do.

"It's been a busy and productive term for the SSLT with the Year 12 prefects really beginning to settle into their responsibilities. One of the key highlights to note has been the Little Heath Sixth Form Open Evening where it was great to speak to so many Year 11 students who are considering attending. Our prefect groups have been busy too, such as Curriculum Prefects with the appointment of Year 12 Subject Mentors and Tutors to support Year 11 students academically in their GCSEs, Diversity Prefects who created a video to celebrate Diwali, and Mental Health Prefects who created a video to commemorate World Mental Health Day. We have many more exciting initiatives to come in 2025 which we can't wait to share with you!"

There was a mix of excitement and nerves as Year 11 students lined up for their PPE results envelopes this week. Many were pleased with their results, showing the hard work they put into their PPEs. Some were less satisfied, but with 18 weeks of school before the first GCSEs, there's still plenty of time to improve revision skills and attend intervention sessions to boost results. For some, the hard work starts now!
The next few weeks are key for Year 11, beginning with a Tutor Time session to review how students revised for these PPEs, and what they might do differently next time. This will be followed by in-depth analysis in lessons and personalised assemblies for different groups of students, where students will set clear targets for the remainder of the year. It’s clear this is another talented year group, and today gave us a glimpse of what to expect next August. Well done Year 11, keep up the good work!
Year 7 Turn Tilehurst Red for Remembrance Day
On Friday 8 November we took our Year 7 Form Reps to Tilehurst Triangle to represent the school at the Turn Tilehurst Red event. We are proud to support this event at the heart of Tilehurst. Hear from some our our Year 7 students who attended the event:
"We walked up to Triangle in pairs, and we were chatting all the way. It was worth the walk! The poppy was already impressively covered by the time we got there, but the white areas still needed pennies. We were given some pennies, and we scattered the money onto the poppy, trying to cover as many of the blue areas under the poppy as we could. Everyone tried their hardest and we did well. We also chatted a bit with the organisers. We were all really pleased to be able to go and represent the school at this event. Thank you for the opportunity."
Finley A, Year 7
"The poppy had been covered through the day but we got set the target of covering all of the blue under the pennies. Each person was given a handful of pennies, and we scattered them on to the poppy. I think we did a good job of trying to cover everything. It was really nice to go out and represent the school. A big thank you to Mr Linz and all the staff who gave us this opportunity."
Olly H, Year 7
Foodbank House Competition Result
Thank you to everyone who donated to our Foodbank House Competition this month. We had a terrific response and collected 260.9kg of donations which were collected by the West Berkshire Foodbank. This is enough to provide 548 meals, helping to feed 26 people with three meals a day for seven days.
The results of the House competition are:
1st place - Stirling and Arundel
2nd place - Conway
3rd place - Warwick
Congratulations to Mr John, Stirling Head of House, and Mr James, Arundel Head of House, for generating support for the competition and helping to load the donations. Thank you also to Mrs Horley and the Geography department for organising this collection, and to you for the continued support that the school community has given to this worthwhile cause!
The West Berkshire Foodbank supports people in food crisis, additionally providing essential items such as toiletries, sanitary products, baby food and pet food, only possible because of the kindness of others.
Thank you!
Bag2School House Competition Result
Thank you to everyone who donated clothing to our recent Bag2School collection! We have collected 1,144kg to be donated, which means we have raised a massive total of £228.80 for the school fund.
This was a House Competition, and the results are as follows:
1st Place – Conway - 396kg
2nd Place – Stirling – 274kg
3rd Place – Arundel – 246kg
4th Place – Warwick – 228kg
Thank you to everyone who dug through their wardrobes to make a contribution. Massive congratulations to Mrs Harper and Conway for yet another Bag2School win!

Sustainability at Little Heath School
Hello! We're the Sixth Form students leading in sustainability, and we’d like to discuss what we've been doing so far this year. For the first time ever, sustainability has become a topic the Senior Student Leadership Team are focusing on, as improving our environmental footprint at Little Heath is extremely important to us. We hope to set into motion lasting changes that will make our school much more sustainable going forward.
We have recently carried out energy audits in the Sixth Form block, one at lunchtime and one after school. The aim of these was to see how much of our energy usage is wasted on empty classrooms. To tackle our high energy consumption, we are making posters that we will put up around the school to encourage people to turn off computers, and we have created a ‘traffic light system’ - each plug/electronic device will have a different colour sticker on it, showing people whether or not they can turn it off.

Last week was National Tree Week, so what better time to plant 30 native hedgerow saplings donated by the Woodland Trust, via their free trees for schools programme.
17 students from the Eco-Committee, from years 7, 8 and 11, worked hard to prepare the area in our nature space to plant our new hedgerow, which will not only help to disguise the adjacent car park, but also provide habitat and food for birds and insects.
|
|
We also took the opportunity to plant over 200 native spring flowering bulbs, including Bluebells, Wild Garlic and Winter Aconite; and an area of wildflowers and grasses. This is in addition to four Crab Apple Trees which were planted last month.
All the planting will help to increase biodiversity and provide year-round food for important pollinators such as bees.

In November, select Year 12 Politics students and prefects from the Sustainability group attended a Mock COP29 event at Holme Grange School, which included assigned delegates for each country (we represented Bangladesh and the United Arab Emirates) discussing ways they can decrease their contributions to climate change, and a talk from a Climate Scientist.
We all really enjoyed the experience and thought it was a good way to educate and encourage young people to act on the dangers that climate change poses.
As Sixth Form prefects, we are working with and alongside the whole school Eco-Committee, with an emphasis on taking the ideas suggested by younger students and physically putting them into action. We're looking at implementing a couple of litter reduction strategies (expanding on our ballot bin initiatives, and labelling which bins can be used for different items in a clearer, more creative way) and house competition ideas (we'll update you when we know more details for sure), all suggested by younger students!
Other initiatives we've been working on include planning an off-timetable Eco-Day for year 7 students in the summer, to go beyond the curriculum and teach them about ways they can be more eco-friendly. We’ve also been talking to our catering team, Culinera, to ensure that there are regularly sustainable, plant-based meals on offer in our school restaurant.
We hope to do some great work this year and will keep you updated on our progress!
Poppy, Year 12
Sustainability Prefect

U16 Boys' Basketball Team
Well done to the U16 Boys' Basketball Team, who have won all five of their games in their local league, beating LVS, Denefield, Kennet, Blessed Hugh Farringdon and Theale so far. The group is working extremely hard to prepare for their national cup fixtures which are later this term.
|
|
The biggest highlight so far has been beating Blessed Hugh Farringdon in a very close game 54-50. The level of basketball for a school match was very impressive, and the team were delighted to beat Hugh Farringdon for the first time as they had lost to them in last year's league fixture.

Peer Mentoring
A group of kind Year 12 students have begun mentoring some of our younger students and, even in these initial weeks, this is proving to be both popular with the individuals involved and very worthwhile.
Elsewhere, our fantastic SMILE team continue to visit Year 7 tutor groups each week offering a mix of advice and activities, and they have received an enthusiastic and positive welcome from our Year 7s. Some individual mentoring from the SMILE team to some members of Year 7 is about to begin.
|
|
School and Year Councils
Our Year Councils are meeting again this month to discuss any issues raised by students. We have been so impressed by the enthusiasm and commitment of all of our Form Reps and the vibrancy of the discussions in the meetings we have had so far. We are looking forward to our next full School Council meeting in early December.

Student Leadership
Many Sixth Formers, from both Year 12 and Year 13, excelled as ambassadors at our recent Sixth Form Open Evening, and we were delighted to receive so many compliments about them. Our Year 8 students continue to do us proud by taking their turn as ambassadors at Reception.
|
|
"One highlight for me personally was helping at the sixth form and whole school open days! It was lovely to see so many prospective students and talk to them and their parents about History and English literature, and I'm very glad I had the opportunity to help."
Heidi, Year 13
Deputy Head Student

"My highlight of the term has definitely been helping at the sixth form open evening and working with the new Year 12 prefects and I’m super excited to see what else we can do next term!"
Alex, Year 13
Deputy Head Student

Elsewhere, our Year 9 Young Health Champions have been presented with their RSPH certificates by Paul Graham, West Berkshire's Health and Wellbeing in schools officer, after all successfully passing their training. Some members of our Sixth Form have represented LHS at an online forum for young people run by MIND, the mental health charity, seeking the input of young people across Berkshire and Oxfordshire, about issues affecting young people today.
