RBH Youth Forum

Do you have any students who would like to join the RBH Youth Forum?  The purpose of the Youth Forum is for the views of young people in our local community who are aged between 16- 24 to be to get them heard and involved in the decisions made by the Royal Berkshire Hospital.

 

I have attached information on the Youth Forum and an application form for students to apply above.  Students will require a referee for their applications.

Army Officer Internship Program

Wednesday 25th September - 11:00 - 12:00pm

 Ready to learn how to overcome physical and mental challenges? And develop leadership qualities and management skills? The Army Internship Programme is your opportunity to experience a challenging and rewarding year with the Army in the role of an Army Officer for 12 months before, during or 2 years after University.

 

You will receive the same world class leadership training at the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst as our Army Reserve Officers and then further training afterwards, depending on your role. You will then be attached to a regular Army unit, in the UK and on routine duties around the world, shadowing the daily role of an Army Officer, learning to lead up to 30 soldiers.

Careers in the Arts

The Watermill and The Corn Exchange

We are running an Audition Prep workshop on Sunday 15 September, 10am – 4pm,  for 16 – 25-year-olds who are wanting to audition for university, drama school and / or theatre and tv roles https://cornexchangenew.com/events/audition-prep-workshop

 

The workshop is being run by professional actor and drama coach Simon Darwen, focusing on audition preparation and performance skills. Simon Darwen is a stage and Tv actor and was recently cast in the feature film The Great Escaper with Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. His TV work includes Top Boy, Years and Years, Call the Midwife, Silent Witness and The Bletchley Circle.

 

The workshop will look at the following -

 1.What makes a good audition.

2.What are we nervous about and how can we shift the mentality to take pressure off ourselves?

3.What is expected in the room and how to make a good account of yourself?

4.Whats your biggest fear?

 

They will examine some successful and unsuccessful auditions and analyse what worked/didn't work and why? Students will be able to perform audition speeches in front of each other and receive peer feedback before receiving direction and feedback from Simon.

The Watermill and The Corn Exchange

The Watermill Theatre's term is starting this week and we still have places left on our 16 - 25 Youth Theatre group on Thursday evenings at 6:30pm:

This is a wonderful group and would give young people the opportunity to audition for the Watermill's Youth Ensemble production, which this year will be Emil and the Detectives by Erich Kästner an adapted by Carl Miller.

 

Please note, this opportunity is not part of the Careers in the Arts project so is not free. The cost of the term is £135. Please visit the Watermill website (link is above) for more information about the course.

 

Thames Hospice Reading – WX Opportunity

As the Hospice serving East Berkshire and South Buckinghamshire, we are pleased to announce that we are opening a Charity superstore in Richfield Avenue, Reading to enable us to continue to raise the funds necessary to provide our services.  This is a new and ambitious venture for us and we are inviting your sixth form students to help us on our journey.

Our primary aim is to raise funds for the hospice by selling pre-loved items. Alongside fashion, furniture, homeware and children’s items we will have several new departments. We will have a café, a Repair shed workshop that will encompass a range of repair and upcycling activities and also a Tailoring and haberdashery department.

We are looking forward to welcoming your students as potential volunteers for us and are happy to look at group volunteering and work experience opportunities too. of volunteering.

We will be opening our new store in October 2024.

We would be very grateful if you could publicise these opportunities for us amongst your students and look forward to working with you in the future.

RBH Work Experience

For the academic year September 2024 to August 2025 medicine placement weeks are:

(2-3 day placements)

Intake 1 – 28th October to 1st November 2024 (days are allocated)

Intake 2 – 24th to 28th February 2025 (days are allocated)

Intake 3- 12th to 17th May 2025 (days are allocated)

Intake 4 – 7th to 11th July 2025 (days are allocated)

 

Application periods Intake 1 and 2 – from 31st August 2024 to 11th September 2024

Application periods Intake 3 and 4 – from 17th February 2025 to 26th February 2025 for placements allocated during the weeks of 12th May 2025 and 7th July 2025

 

To register an interest and request an application form please ask students planning on applying for medicine to contact medicineworkexperience@royalberkshire.nhs.uk during the application periods.

 

Our nursing programme for students who are planning to apply for nursing after Yr. 13 are open. There will be 2 intakes during the academic year (12 places each intake). Flyer attached.

 

Pharmacy will be 3 times over the year (6 places each intake). Placements for AHPs will be 3 intakes over the year (12 places each intake) Midwifery two intakes over the year (7 places each intake) Placements are later in the academic year - flyers are attached.

 

We will also have a place each month for Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery – please make students aware this is not a placement for those aspiring to be general dentists, it is for surgery.

We receive a huge number of applications for all areas and are very sorry that we will be unable to offer every student who applies a place. Applicants must be in Yr. 12/13, resident in Berkshire and able to attend during the placement weeks. We will be unable to accept applications received outside of the application dates.

 The programme will take a deeper look into Cisco departments and provide opportunities to spend time with teams, albeit virtually. We’ll do some networking, there will be a business challenge that you work on as a group and we’ll be learning about and practising employability skills such as interviewing and CVs. Plus learn about routes into Cisco straight from school via the apprenticeships, as an intern once at university or as a graduate after university. This is a full four days of learning opportunities. You will need a device, preferably with a camera, to join the virtual meetings. A laptop is best, with a tablet and then a phone in the order of how to get the best experience.

Metropolitan Police Service - Police Constable Degree Apprenticeship

Whilst this position is recruiting for February next year so only applicable to Y13s, it is certainly

worth a look and perhaps something to consider.   The Police Constable Degree

Apprenticeship (PCDA) means you can learn as you earn, gaining a (BSc) Hons degree in

professional policing practice. The Met covers all qualification fees so there's no cost to you, it's all

fully funded.  It’s a three-year programme, which combines learning with policing London's streets.

The University of York are hosting a virtual taster session for year 12 students embarking on their
